Why I Started The Book Lady

My love for books and storytelling began when I was a child. Growing up, I dreamed of becoming an author and journalist because I loved reading, writing, and sharing stories. While life ultimately led me down a different career path, my passion for literacy and helping others tell their stories never disappeared.

While working with youth through the YMCA Safe Place program, I had the opportunity to help children write, illustrate, and create their own books. Watching them develop ideas, put their thoughts on paper, and see themselves as authors was truly inspiring. I witnessed their confidence grow as they realized that their stories mattered and that they had something valuable to share with the world.

Those experiences sparked a vision. I wanted to create opportunities for more children, families, and community members to experience the joy of reading, writing, storytelling, and publishing. I wanted people to discover that they are not just readers of stories—they can be storytellers too.

That vision became The Book Lady.

How I Got the Name "The Book Lady"

While working with children in the YMCA Safe Place program, I spent countless hours helping them create and write their own books. As the project grew, the children began referring to me as "The Book Lady."

What started as a simple nickname quickly became a title that reflected my passion and purpose. The name represented my love for literacy, storytelling, and helping young people become authors. When it came time to launch my own literacy initiative, I chose to keep the name because it was given to me by the children themselves.

Today, The Book Lady is more than a name—it is a mission.

Our mission is to inspire a lifelong love of reading, encourage creativity, and help people of all ages discover the power of their own stories. Through literacy programs, community events, educational outreach, and storytelling opportunities, we strive to build confidence, strengthen families, and create brighter futures through the gift of literacy.

We believe every child has a story worth telling, every family has a story worth sharing, and every book has the power to change a life.

Building Strong Readers for a Brighter Future.
